24 to the Peezy

Fuh sheezy.  Yes, I got it.  Thanks for asking.  I know you were worried that I would forget.

No.

The new firmware for my camera peeked out from behind the canon.jp curtain a little after 9pm yesterday.  Technically a ‘day’ early for us on the east coast, but maybe not in Japan?  I don’t know my international time tables very well.  Are they in the future?  They have robots so I will put a check in the ‘yes’ column.

So desperate was I to grab it ASAP that downloaded it to my country shanty via iPhone using a 3rd party app over a non-3G network, copied it wirelessly to my laptop, then into the camera.  I am a maniac.

After some unscientific and undemanding testing I went to bed.

Philip Bloom has had the firmware for weeks, on the other hand.  Been holding out on us, he has.  Today he made public some sketches that he’s done in the last month in native 24p with the 5dMk2.

Quite a bit of timelapse in the beginning of this one and the 24p doesn’t sock you in the face but you can tell it’s there.  I think the crazy wide 2.35:1 (instead of 16:9) ratio he did in post is there to strengthen that filmic quality.

If you follow the link to his Vimeo page you can see a quick music promo video he did in 24p and I think you get an even better feel for what it brings to the camera. Looks a lot more like film or TV, doesn’t it? Shallow depth of field from the 50mm lens and aspect ratio helps too but there’s a slightly smoother, or motion blurred, feel.

Can’t wait to shoot my own stuff!  I considered bringing the camera with me today for lunch but fell prey to my new slogan and said screw it.
